Lissivigeen National School and Lissivigeen Community Alert teamed up to work on this project during the month of May. The aim of the project was that the children would learn from the older people in our locality about their community and about the customs and traditions which are disappearing.
We asked Christy Lehane of Lissivigeen Community Alert for some help in organising this. Christy and his team came on board and they thought it would be a great opportunity for them to document and record some of the older people talking to the children about times gone by. Christy Lehane brought in Sean Hurley from Kerry Radio who decided to make a radio programme out of the project. Sean Hurley got so much material from his few days with us that he decided to make two programmes, the first of which will be on radio on Sunday 13th June at 9.00pm.
We selected groups of children from 4th, 5th and 6th class to go out and meet various people in our community. These groups then reported back to the rest of the classes about what they had learned, with the help of slide show presentations of photographs taken by Pat Kelleher of Lissivigeen Community Alert.
We would like to thank the following people from our community who gave of their time to talk to our pupils:
Sean O’ Donoghue, who showed us around Clash House and explained all about his old farm machinery.

The children learned a great deal about their local community, past and present, from this project and they are also developing a sense of place and pride in their own locality. Hopefully this will set seeds for the future and the children who have worked alongside our Community Alert members on this project will themselves become the Community workers of the future.
Thanks again to Christy Lehane, Pat Kelleher, Brendan Mc Carthy, Mary Cahill, Ann Cronin and Denis Russell of Lissivigeen Community Alert. Thanks to Sean Hurley of Radio Kerry for the excellent way he helped the children while making the Radio programme and to Bobby Kelly who has made a video of the project.

Skipathon raises vital funds for the Irish Heart Foundation making a significant contribution to funding childrens health promotion projects. By encouraging children to skip they learn that getting active is fun and the positive experience helps them make healthy decisions at a young age. Thanks again for the great support. National Live Music Day event: ‘Lissivigeen Loves Live Music’
To celebrate Ireland’s first National Live Music Day on April 16th 2010, there were weird and wonderful sounds emanating from the school hall at Lissivigeen National School between 11.30am and 12 noon. Under the capable directorship of Nico Brown, musician, children from junior infants to 3rd class (approx. 150 children) formed an instant orchestra of percussion instruments and collectively improvised a piece of music. Nico brings many influences to bear on his workshops with children so they will play instruments and perform sounds never before heard in Killarney!

After Kerry's great win over Cork last Sunday in the All Ireland Final we took to the field ourselves this week to try and retain our Cumann na mBunscoil county title. Lissivigeen boys took part in a blitz in the Spa field on Thursday 24th Sept. We played Gaelscoil Killarney, Gaelscoil Castleisland and the Boys School Castleisland. Unfortunatly we were not successful on this occasion but well done to all our players who put in very sporting performances. To See more Pictures from the day, Click here |
